On Sunday, May 19, 2024, Caltrans will install new signage and modified lane delineation (striping) to help improve traffic safety and reduce the potential for broadside traffic collisions at these intersections.

The new all-way stop traffic control system will see new stop signs installed on eastbound and westbound Mathews Road. “Stop Ahead” pavement markings will also be installed on Mathews Road in advance of the intersections.

Temporary roadside message signs will be placed at the intersections for approximately two weeks prior to these new improvements to provide motorists with advance warning and to help adjust to the new intersection traffic controls.

These interim improvements are being made in advance of the larger Interstate 5 Mathews Road Intersection Improvement Project that proposes to install interconnected signals at four intersections, modify sidewalks to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, and modify turn lanes to accommodate Surface Transportation Assistance Act (STAA) trucks and projected traffic volumes. These modifications will be performed at the following intersections:

  • Two northbound and southbound on/off-ramp intersections at I-5/Mathews Road
  • Two intersections at Mathews Road/Manthey Road and Mathews Road/El Dorado Street

These improvements are also being made to accommodate the increased traffic volume anticipated with the new Veterans’ Affairs Clinic building located at 6505 South Manthey Road, French Camp, CA, while ensuring a continued safe and reliable route to San Joaquin General Hospital, San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, and local businesses in the area.
