State Route 39 Emergency Highway Repairs

Location

State Route 39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road) north of I-210 in Los Angeles County in Angeles National Forest.

The Project

There are multiple emergency projects to repair damage to the highway and its slopes and embankments.

Background

Relentless storms from the winter of 2022/2023 caused damage to multiple sections of SR-39. Damage between post mile 19.2 (north of the entrance to Morris Dam) and post mile 35.5 (near Falling Springs) included rockfall, washed-out embankments, damage to drains and metal beam guardrails and a damaged retaining wall. Repairs include rock scaling, removing rockslides, installing an elevated cable-mesh drapery system along a slope, rebuilding slopes, replacing the retaining wall, replacing guardrails and drains, repaving, and restriping.

Benefits

The areas of reconstruction will be reinforced and stabilized with the intent to prevent future highway, slope and embankment failures in the same locations and maintain a safe travel route.

Parameters & Schedule

One-way traffic control with flagging is in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at varying points between post mile 19.2 (north of the entrance to Morris Dam) and post mile 35.5 (near Falling Springs) at least through May of 2024. Expect delays of ten to fifteen minutes at each location.
