Caltrans Reopens Eastbound I-8 Lanes at California/Arizona Line to Algodones Road/State Route 186

EL CENTRO, Calif. — Crews opened both lanes of eastbound Interstate 8 (I-8) from just west of Algodones Road/State Route 186 (SR-186) to the California-Arizona state line. I-8 had been reduced to one lane in each direction as work progressed on Segment 3 of the I-8 Update Project in Imperial County. Crews opened the westbound lanes of this segment on July 28.

Motorists will encounter lane reductions on I-8 for seven miles from just west of the Algodones Road/SR-186 separation to west of Ogilby Road overcrossing for Segment 5 work. A five-mile section of I-8 from about one-half mile west of State Route 111 to one-half mile east of Barbara Worth Drive has also been reduced to one lane in each direction along the westerly section of Segment 4.

Traffic impacts include a reduced speed limit through the construction area and possible travel delays. Signs have been placed to alert motorists to the construction and lane reduction.

The I-8 Update is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 and will be completed by 2019.

Caltrans reminds motorists to slow down when driving through highway work zones. Motorists are reminded to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment in the project area.
