The Ventura Freeway (US 101) is a major coastal north–south route that links the Los Angeles Area, Central Coast, San Francisco Bay Area, and North Coast. It is a key transportation route for the movement of people, goods and services throughout the state, exceeding the capacity of the four-lane highway. Recognizing the importance of US 101′s economic role, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7,
serving Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) and Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) are investing over $102 million in improvements over the next four years. The project is expected to begin spring 2012 and be completed in late 2015.
