Caltrans Transportation Planning Grant Program

Announcing FY 2019-20 Caltrans Grant Application Guides and Call-for-Applications

Caltrans is pleased to release the FY 2019-20 Grant Application Guides and call-for-applications for the traditional State and federal funding, as well as grant funding from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017.  The Grant Application Guides were developed last summer with input from four public workshops and stakeholder comments.  A total of $40 million is available for transportation planning projects statewide.  The information provided below will assist with the successful completion of grant applications, due November 30, 2018 by 5 PM.  Grant announcements are anticipated in spring 2019 (see schedule below).  Please contact the appropriate Caltrans district staff (see “District Contacts” below) if there are questions about developing competitive grant applications.

The available transportation planning grants include:

  • Sustainable Communities Grants ($29.5 million) to encourage local and regional planning that furthers state goals, including, but not limited to, the goals and best practices cited in the Regional Transportation Plan Guidelines adopted by the California Transportation Commission.
  • Strategic Partnerships Grants ($4.5 million) to identify and address statewide, interregional, or regional transportation deficiencies on the State highway system in partnership with Caltrans.  The transit component that will fund planning projects that address multimodal transportation deficiencies with a focus on transit.
  • Adaptation Planning Grants ($6 million) to support planning actions at local and regional levels that advance climate change efforts on the transportation system.

Grant applicants are encouraged to contact Caltrans district staff (below) to ask questions and receive technical assistance with application development. 

 

Anticipated Schedule for FY 2019-20 Transportation Planning Grants (i.e., Sustainable Communities, Strategic Partnerships, and Adaptation Planning)

 

Caltrans FY 2018-19 Transportation Planning Grants

On May 11,2018, Caltrans announced the release of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018-19 Caltrans Transportation Planning Grant awards. A statewide total of 180 grant applications were received that requested approximately $51 million for: Sustainable Communities Competitive, Strategic Partnerships (including transit), and Adaptation Planning. Of these applications, 99 transportation planning projects were selected for grant awards, totaling approximately $28.87 million. Award and Non-Award lists for each grant are provided below. In addition, Metropolitan Planning Organizations will receive $12.5 million in Sustainable Communities Formula grants to further their Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy. Grant applicants are encouraged to contact Caltrans district staff to request feedback for unsuccessful applications and receive technical assistance with application development.
