Each year on statewide Worker Memorial Day, Caltrans honors these employees by placing their names on a memorial plaque in the lobby of the Caltrans Headquarters building in Sacramento.
2018 Caltrans Statewide Workers Memorial Ceremony
Honoring Our Fallen Workers
Caltrans held its annual statewide Fallen Workers Memorial on Thursday, April 26, 2018, on the west steps of the State Capitol.
During the ceremony, we honored those who lost their lives building, maintaining, and operating California’s world-class transportation system. This year, we paid special tribute to Si Si Han, District 4 Toll Collector, who was struck and killed by a driver who was allegedly under the influence when the box truck he was driving crashed into the toll booth. We also honored Annette Brooks, District 4 Structural Steel Painter Supervisor, who was shot and killed while on the job last year in Rio Dell, CA.
This observance also highlighted safety awareness for employees in work zones, as well as the motoring public.
This ceremony was held in coordination with Caltrans Safety Awareness Week. We hope that you were able to attend one of the memorials held throughout the state as we honored those lost while on the job. A video of the 2018 Caltrans statewide Fallen Workers Memorial is now available for online viewing.
Caltrans is committed to providing safe and efficient work zones, both for the traveling public and employees working on the state highway system. The Mission, Vision, and Goals, for the Department place safety highest among its commitments.
"Every day, thousands of highway workers put their lives in danger just by going to work and serving the public... Californians can help keep our highways safe by slowing down in the ‘work zone’ and complying with the Move Over law."
The Department's safety goal is to achieve the best safety record in the nation. Help us accomplish this goal by learning more about Worker and Work Zone safety below.
